‘My Birds’ Table’, ‘A May Night with the Lantern Fairy’ and ‘Nonwild Animals in the City’ — the latest offerings for children from ‘Bulgarian Illustration’ publishing house
‘Bulgarian Illustration’ which was established three years ago as a ‘small publishing house with big hopes’ bids farewell to 2023 with three new titles following its mission to guide young readers on the path of self-discovery and respect for nature with works by contemporary Bulgarian authors and illustrators.
‘Nonwild Animals in the City’ is the third book in the homonymous series, in which the author Elena Pavlova tells, and the illustrator Milena Radeva shows the hardships many animals face in the city. The stories are based on real-life events and are filled with valuable information and first aid tips. The book includes narratives about animals that have been thrown away by their owners or have escaped, such as the ‘influencer’ Ovnimir, Petulia the goose, Goran the badger, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, agamas, turtles, parrots and many others. A portion of the book proceeds will be donated once again to partner organizations whose cause is also the rescue of (non)wild animals in urban environments.
Following ‘Niya and the Goblin Treasure’ the eloquent Vesela Flamburari keeps telling her ‘Fairy Tales from the Misty Island’ with ‘A May Night with the Lantern Fairy’. The series is a blend of fantasy for young readers and classic fairy tales with Milena Radeva’s enchanting illustrations. The second book tells the story of the extraordinary Moon fairy, who works as a professional lantern, and her best friend — the moonbeam Fungi. Together, they face numerous seemingly insurmountable obstacles on the Misty Island, learning valuable lessons about love and self-sacrifice along the way.
‘My Birds’ Table’ is an accessible beginner’s guide to ornithology and the first book of the illustrator Milena Radeva (organizer of the National Biennial of Illustration and founder of ‘Bulgarian Illustration’ publishing house). It includes 38 bird species we can still encounter at amateur feeders in urban and suburban environments and each description introduces the reader to their most recognizable features, traditional habitats, favorite foods and glimpses of their character. It is also accompanied by lively scientific illustrations. At the end of the book, there is a reader’s journal where novice bird enthusiasts can record their observations. To facilitate their experience, the publication also comes with a feeder that they can assemble themselves, following step-by-step instructions. The book is printed on 100% recycled paper.
In 2024, ‘Bulgarian Illustration’ publishing house plans to offer its readers the third book in the ‘Fairy Tales from the Misty Island’ series, an unexpected Christmas title and a new series dedicated to the cities in Bulgaria.
